HostGator is one of the biggest and most popular hosting providers that host well over 8 million domains. Question is, is it worth the price and how does their service compare against other hosting providers in an ever-growing market? With this review, we will have a look at all the services they offer, pros and cons and see if it is worth spending money on.

HostGator – Quick Overview

What is HostGator?

HostGator is an online company that provides a bunch of services, with the main service being hosting, such as reseller hosting, shared hosting and so forth. They also provide other kinds of services such as website builders, domain names and so on. HostGator is basically the go-to when you want to build and host a website.

Short History

HostGator was founded back in 2002 by university student Brent Oxley. Since then the company has grown exponentially, with over 1 000 employees. They also moved their headquarters from Boca Raton, Florida to Houston, Texas, where they acquired a 20 000 square foot building. They have also since then been nominated for multiple awards, been published in magazines and so forth.

Any Upsales?

HostGator does not have any up sales, however, they do have multiple plans, so depending on what choices you make, you will either have a single plan to pay for or multiple plans.

Is There a Money-Back Guarantee?

HostGator has money-back guarantees on all of their products/plans, but keep in mind that the time period for these guarantees is not all the same. Some have 30-day money-back guarantees, whereas others have 45 days.

What About Support?

HostGator does offer multiple ways one can get support/help. From email to FAQ pages and even an online chat, if help is needed, one will receive it 24/7.

WordPress hosting is when one builds a site using WordPress through a hosting company such as HG, and then you will automatically receive hosting for that website. By doing it like this, one avoids unnecessary costs and memberships. To put it simply, when using them apart, one will have to pay for WordPress and then find a hosting company where one will have to choose a plan and pay for it as well, however by doing it this way, the WordPress site builder and hosting, is all-inclusive in a single plan. HostGator’s WordPress plans include the following:

Reseller Hosting

Reseller hosting is when you start your own hosting program, by using another companies hosting services and then selling, or renting those services to people. To put it simply, you rent/purchase hosting services from HG, and then rent/sell it to other people as if you were the hosting company. This way you get to be a hosting company without the hassles of maintenance on servers, software problems and so forth. HostGator’s reseller hosting services include the following:

  • 60 GB to 140 GB disk space
  • 600 to 1400 bandwidth
  • Free SSL Certificate

VPS Hosting

Virtual Private Server hosting (VPS Hosting) is basically shared hosting in the form of dedicated hosting. Let me explain, Virtual Private Servers imitates dedicated servers, within a shared server, giving one the experience of dedicated hosting, but for cheaper and within a shared environment. HG’s VPS services provide you with more control and flexibility over servers whether your resources are scaled or you want custom applications/configurations installed. The VPS Hosting Services include:

  • 2 GB-8 GB Ram
  • 2-4 core CPU
  • 1.5TB to 3TB Bandwidth
  • 120GB to 240GB Disk Space

Cost: $29.95-$49.95 per month.

Dedicated Hosting

If you want a server all to yourself, then dedicated hosting is what you are looking for. With the dedicated hosting services offered by HostGator, you will literally have a server all to yourself, no sharing with others. This way, you will have a boatload more resources to pull from and have better loading speeds and so forth. Most Dedicated hosting plans come with root access, which means you can modify your server, should you want to, (HG will not be responsible for any errors due to customization of servers). Plans include:

  • 4 core/8 thread to 8 core/16 thread Intel Xeon-D CPU
  • 8GB to 30GB RAM
  • 1TB to 2TB HDD or 512GB to 1TB SSD
  • Unmetered Bandwidth
  • Windows or Linux OS

Hostgator reviews

HostGator provides a simple but powerful user experience with a neat C-panel that is organized and easy to understand. WordPress is easy to install with only a few clicks and the file manager works great. I tested their page load speeds with a page that was not optimized and found no problems with the speed at all. Keep in mind, on a shared hosting account, you have to share server resources with other websites on the same server and you will need to upgrade your hosting plan if you get more visitors for better performance. This brings me to the point of “unlimited bandwidth and space”. When it comes to hosting, there is no such thing, a site with 100K visitors and 300 posts, will not perform well on shared hosting and they will recommend that you upgrade. To sum it up, the cheap plans will work great for small sites that do not have lots of traffic. Then again, if you get 100K visitors, upgrading would not be an issue.

I have found HostGator to be a bit more costly compared to other popular hosting companies that offer the same/or better service. However, when it comes to hosting, one needs a reliable host that will not close shop unexpectedly and HostGator is just that.

Support depends on the time of day and where you are located. Sometimes you will get help immediately, other times you will wait a while. Their support team is super friendly, helpful and a pleasure to deal with.

Like always, I recommend that you start with one website and test the service before you go “big scale” If all fails, it will be easier to move one site than it is to move 10.
